Rabun County Woman Escapes Crossbow Attack; Suspect Caught After Manhunt | CIO Women Magazine

Authorities in Rabun County, Georgia, have arrested a man following a harrowing attempted abduction earlier this week. The incident occurred Monday morning near Bear Gap Road, close to Minnehaha Falls, when a woman was out walking her dog. According to the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO), the woman was confronted by a man who allegedly pointed a crossbow at her and demanded she get into his vehicle, a silver Ford F-150 pickup truck.

Fearing for her life, the woman managed to flee the scene unharmed and promptly contacted authorities. Deputies responded quickly to the area but were initially unable to locate the suspect. In the meantime, a community alert was issued via Facebook by the Lake Rabun Homeowners and the Lake Rabun Association, warning residents of the armed individual and urging caution.

Investigation Leads to Arrest

Following the initial search, the case was taken up by RCSO investigators working alongside agents from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI). After several days of investigative work, authorities were able to identify the suspect as 34-year-old Jack Thomas Harkins, a resident of Tiger, Georgia, located within Rabun County.

On Thursday, officers from both the RCSO and the GBI located and arrested Harkins. He was charged with aggravated assault and taken into custody at the Rabun County Detention Center. Authorities did not provide additional details about how the suspect was located, but confirmed that the arrest was the result of coordinated efforts between local deputies and state agents.

Ongoing Legal Proceedings and Community Response

While the arrest has brought some relief to the local community, law enforcement officials emphasized that the case remains active. The Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office will oversee the prosecution of Harkins. Further charges could be filed as the investigation progresses.

The incident has raised concerns among residents in the typically quiet and scenic North Georgia region. The quick public response, particularly through community-driven platforms such as the Lake Rabun Facebook pages, played a role in raising awareness and promoting safety in the area.

Authorities continue to urge anyone with additional information about the incident or the suspect to come forward as the case moves through the judicial system. Meanwhile, local officials are reassuring the public that patrols in the area have been increased and that steps are being taken to ensure community safety following this alarming event.

The woman involved in the encounter was unharmed and is being commended by law enforcement for her swift actions and presence of mind during a life-threatening situation.
